BIG TECH IS CHANGING TONE ON RACE/TRUMP
I don’t have any words that would do justice to George Floyd’s death so I am not going to try any here. Instead, let’s focus on action. We need to hire better, we need to promote better, we need to do better. Part of this is standing up to injustice when we see it and shine a light on those who seek to change the narrative to suit their ends. Big tech has a lot to answer for but a tide could be turning. Snap joined Twitter this week saying the platform won’t be promoting Trump’s account. Twitter is still limiting the reach and tagging some posts with warnings along with new plays. Facebook seems to be avoiding the issue and its employee’s anxiety growing with the lack of action. Bizarrely coming from the least likely of places should you be looking for anything to do with a soul, Reddit announced it will fill a vacant board seat with a black candidate. Racism is a system, not an event and big tech needs to own up to part it plays in the system now and in the future. Some players are already taking a stand and time will tell if that’s just lip service or doing just that and others are on the wrong side of history.
__ DO __ Report content that is misinformation. Let the owners of these companies know you are angry outside of their platforms. // __ DON’T __ Let racism wash over you. The only difference between racism now and in history is that it is being filmed. More needs to be done than simply documenting it. Being racist and misinformed is a legacy that is passed on that only you can stop.
