APPLE WANTS A POST-PASSWORD FUTURE
Apple has started testing passkeys, a new authentication method that the company claims is as simple to use as passwords but far more secure. A test version of the system will be included with iPhones, iPads, and Macs later this year as part of iCloud Keychains.
To use a passkey to create an account on a website or app, first choose a username for the new account, then use FaceID or Touch ID to verify that you are the one using the device. You never choose a password. The passkey is generated and stored on your device, and iCloud Keychain synchronises it across all of your Apple devices. Watch Garrett Davidson, Apple’s authentication experience engineer, talk about the future where he says;

Another in a long line of privacy pushes from Apple, but one that will annoy hackers since servers will become less valuable targets. The move will increase the price on Apple/iPhone’s head because they will be even bigger prizes to bag. For now at least, Apple continues to push and win the privacy war, but don’t count Google out, aside from cookies, the team also has well over a billion devices to keep secure. The question that hasn’t been fully answered yet, will these systems work together or just serve to lock in consumer even more?

__ DO __ Expect this future to be adopted quickly (although it is currently only for Developers to play around with). Breaches are becoming too frequent, too easy and costly. Conventional passwords are plagued with security shortcomings, chiefly our inability to create and remember unique ones. This problem needs to be fixed versus changing people’s behaviours. // __ DON'T __ Expect the problem to be solved once implemented. New exploits will be looked for, found, and the cycle will continue…along with new issues that will arise that no-one has thought of yet.
